Calling all Android users! Google’s AI chatbot, Gemini, is finally breaking free from its exclusive hangout with Pixel and newer Samsung phones. Now, a wider range of Android devices can join the party and chat with this nifty AI helper directly within the Messages app.

But hold on a sec, there are a few things to keep in mind before you get too excited.

  • RAM requirements: Gemini needs some muscle to run smoothly, so your phone needs to have at least 6GB of RAM. This might exclude some budget phones, but hey, many mid-range devices these days come loaded with 6GB or even 8GB, so chances are you’re good to go.
  • Age and messaging: You gotta be 18 or older to chat with Gemini, and your Messages app needs to have RCS messaging enabled.
  • Account and location: Make sure you’re using the latest version of Messages with a personal Google account (not a Family Link or Workspace account), and that you’re in a country where Gemini is available (over 165 countries!).

If you meet these requirements, then congrats! You’re all set to chat with Google’s AI assistant directly within your familiar Messages app.

So, how do you chat with Gemini?

Using Gemini is as easy as chatting with a friend. Open your Messages app, tap “Start Chat,” and simply choose Gemini as the recipient. If you’ve already had a conversation with Gemini before, just tap on the existing chat to pick things back up.

Once you’re in, the world is your oyster! Ask Gemini questions, make requests, and explore all the cool features it has to offer. It works just like the web version of Gemini, so don’t be afraid to experiment and see what this AI helper can do for you.
